EMDR and Forensic SIG

There is a high prevalence of trauma within forensic settings, which often goes unaddressed. Typically, individuals within this population present with a high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Additionally, individuals may experience ‘perpetrator trauma’ as a consequence of the violent or sexual acts they have committed. Trauma symptoms also frequently present with comorbid serious mental illnesses, such as psychosis and major mood disorders, and personality disorder diagnoses. There is potential for trauma symptoms to hinder recovery and rehabilitation. Although the research literature is presently limited, there is evidence to suggest that successful treatment of trauma symptoms through EMDR may reduce the risk of relapse and re-offending.

The Forensic SIG is aimed at individuals currently practising EMDR within forensic mental health, prison in-reach and community forensic out-patient services. It will aim to:

  • Offer informal professional support and peer supervision to individuals practising EMDR within forensic settings;
  • Provide a space to confidentially discuss difficult cases, success stories, challenges, and ask questions;
  • Share and discuss research relating to the use of EMDR with forensic populations; and
  • Provide opportunities for networking
