Mindfulness-based EMDR
By Dr Alexandra Dent
Thursday 10th September 2020 4 pm to 6.30 pm
Mindfulness practice has become increasingly popular as a therapy and the principles of Mindfulness can be broad and far-reaching. Mindfulness is often understood as ‘meditation’ but it is so much more than this. It consists of ‘informal’ and ‘formal’ mindfulness practice.
Until recently, Mindfulness has not commonly been applied to EMDR therapy. However, when used in the preparation stages, Mindfulness can have very beneficial and powerful effects. The main resources currently used in EMDR include the safe place, container and light stream, all of which are very effective but learning Mindfulness can specifically help individuals stay grounded in the ‘present moment’. Mindfulness increases a person’s awareness in everyday life, especially when they may have previously drifted or dissociated. Clients learn how to stop getting caught up in distressing thoughts and emotions and instead notice a sense of present awareness, peace and calmness. It can increase a person’s window of tolerance for processing distressing memories. Mindfulness complements other techniques such as the Back of the Head Scale (Jim Knipe) and fits perfectly with key aspects of EMDR, especially learning how to tolerate difficult and distressing emotions, awareness of physical sensations and the body scan. By learning the techniques of mindfulness, often in just one or two sessions, clients build up their resources and coping strategies and feel very prepared for EMDR desensitisation and beyond.
This webinar will cover:
- An overview of the benefits of Mindfulness.
- How to explain Mindfulness comprehensively but simply to clients – both informal and formal practice.
- How Mindfulness can be applied and implemented within EMDR therapy including tools to implement Mindfulness exercises to clients (both children and adults).
- This webinar contains a few videos (with the client’s consent). Please only attend the webinar if you consent to NOT recording (in any format) any parts of the videos.
