David is a Consultant Clinical & Health Psychologist (Chartered) and EMDR Consultant-in-Training, in private practice. Specialising in Adult Mental Health he later focussed on Chronic Pain, both before, and now after, the new-fangled EMDR. Along the way, he has been a Yoga teacher and a Martial Arts instructor.
This webinar will illustrate the essence of trauma as experienced by high-speed train drivers faced with ‘causing’ death, having had no hope of avoiding it. Sometimes their trauma is intense, and it is not unknown for drivers to go on to commit suicide themselves. All of them were referred for EMDR as the counselling they had already received was not working, leaving them off work for months, often making matters much worse. A key area for discussion will be how the interaction of personality, ACEs, family life and the working environment can all conspire to make treatment a potential nightmare in itself.
This will be a sharing of clinical material that turned out to be extremely useful with this client population, including how to recover when things go wrong. A very high percentage of drivers seen returned to work with only one or two making a positive career change instead. While this is a specialist area, some of the theory and practice presented here will be generalisable to therapy for anyone with complex PTSD following the belief they have caused someone’s death.
This is open not only to EMDR therapists who are members but also EMDR therapist non-members, so feel free to forward this to colleagues to ensure a broader reach for this event.
The event will be run through Zoom, it is limited to 500 registrants, but if you cannot log on, it will be recorded and available on EMDR Association UK website the following week.
