President’s Update: Autumn 2024

22 November, 2024

Trees and sky at sunset

Dear members, colleagues and friends,

Those of us who struggle with the short days, long nights, overcast skies and low temperatures will have brought out our light boxes and be looking at budgets and leave allowances to see if time in a place with longer days and brighter skies would be manageable.  It’s not all bad though, setting out for early morning walkies in the pitch black, our path illuminated by my dog Red’s lighted collar can seem a bit daunting but often enough we are treated to magnificent sunrises on our way home, lovely!

Comings and goings

Anthea Sutton has taken up her position as Academic and Research Liaison Officer, which was felt to be more suited to the activity of the RSC and has already made a start by scoping the provision of EMDR in Universities and sharing the results with Europe who are also looking at this.

John Henry, a member of the accreditation committee for a number of years and one of the very early members of EMDR UK will be known to many of you as an excellent consultant supervisor and Training facilitator.  John has decided to retire from the Accreditation Committee.  Massive thanks to John for his contribution and we wish him a long and happy retirement.

Consultants’ Day

Is taking place on 30 November this year hosted by EMDR UK.  It is a hybrid event with the in-person element at Friends Meeting House on Euston Road.  This is a not to be missed event for all consultants, even if you have already attended your obligatory 1 in 5 years.  Robin Logie and Naomi Fisher are delivering an excellent presentation ‘Is this video good enough’ which will take you through the competency monitoring dilemmas we face as we make decisions on our supervisees’ readiness for accreditation.

If you are a consultant and haven’t booked already, I strongly recommend you do so before registration closes – you won’t regret it.

Darren McGarvey

Darren makes no secret of the fact that he was a service user in his childhood and places great value on his experience and the work he did with his EMDR Therapist.  He is now a well-known musician, author and broadcaster.  His books ‘Poverty Safari ‘ and ‘The Social Distance Between us’ are both highly acclaimed, the first was an Orwell prize winner in 2018 and the second published in 2022, the year he was awarded a BAFTA for his factual series Addictions.  He has expressed an interest in becoming our Patron and will be delivering a keynote at the annual conference in Liverpool this March.  Save the dates 21 & 22 March 2025.

Membership Management System (Coalesce) and Digital Accreditation

Are we nearly there yet?  Yes nearly.  We’ve recently ended the testing phase of the digital accreditation and have taken the feedback forward to develop the next phase.  Digitised Accreditation is being integrated into membership dashboard Coalesce which is currently undergoing its final touches and testing as we prepare to set it up on the servers. We would like to launch before the end of the year, but this will depend on availability of manpower to support each step throughout the coming weeks.  A clear go live date will be broadcast to you all as soon as we have one,

Take care everyone.

Still running
