Queen Elizabeth II – 1926-2022
15 September, 2022
Our thoughts are with all those affected by the death of Queen Elizabeth II on the 8th September 2022, particularly her family at this difficult time. A period of national mourning reminds us that death can bring up many difficult emotions. It can activate memories of our own individual losses, grief and trauma. It is also important to acknowledge that not all will have the same response. Having served for over two decades in the Royal Navy under the Queen’s leadership I was deeply saddened on hearing the news. However, I know some will have a very different experience due to people’s diverse views on the monarchy, the commonwealth and colonialism, alongside possible transgenerational trauma. It’s important that we all acknowledge each other’s emotions and views at this difficult time with kindness and compassion.
If you are struggling with loss and trauma, you can find a list of accredited EMDR therapists on this website who can help. I encourage members of the EMDR Association UK and any therapist who is struggling to reach out to their supervisors, colleagues, friends, family and other support networks.
